Note:  Joe Maloney is the elected official from Legislative District 2 – Saugerties

“It is deeply disturbing to learn that the Mercer family – funders of far-right fringe outlets including Breitbart News and the likes of Steve Bannon – is being welcomed into Ulster County by Legislator Joe Maloney to host a dinner event.  These are the very same people who fund and promote hate and divisiveness by supporting anti-Semitism, misogyny, racism and homophobia.

“It was disappointing but not surprising to learn that Legislator Joe Maloney would partner with a far-right fringe group to build support for his efforts.  I am pleased to see the term-limit issue, which would ultimately go before Ulster County voters as a referendum, be the subject of public debate. However, to think that Legislator Joe Maloney would partner with such a divisive organization in an attempt to influence the actions of the Ulster County Legislature is disgraceful. Regardless of one’s position in support or opposition to the debate surrounding term limits, it is my hope that the people of Ulster County will reject Legislator Joe Maloney’s efforts to bring “dark money” organizations that are funded by individuals who promote hate and division into our community. This is inconsistent with our values of inclusiveness and respect and has no place in a fair and just society.

“I am proud that here in Ulster County we have delivered some of the most innovative and thoughtful public policy that protects not only our environment, but also some of our most vulnerable citizens like children, seniors and homeless veterans. These efforts prove that by working together we can be both fiscally and socially responsible.

“The event on June 19th is organized by Reclaim New York Initiative, which is the 501(c)(4) arm of Reclaim New York. Reclaim New York was founded in 2013 by billionaire hedge-fund tycoon Robert Mercer and Steve Bannon, former head of Breitbart News. In 2016, the Mercer Family Foundation contributed $1,600,000 to fund Reclaim New York. The New York City-based nonprofit has been expanding its local presence across New York State in hopes of rallying citizens to support an agenda it claims is about government reform, but which is more accurately described as a front for an ultra-right wing political agenda.

“These are not the values of the great people of Ulster County and it is my hope that responsible Legislators, from both sides of the aisle, will immediately reject hate groups no matter how convincing their disguises may be.

Here is the inviation to the Reclaim New York Event/Dinner Featuring Legislator Joe Maloney

Ulster County legislators have proposed term limits that would limit most elected officials from serving more than 12 years in any single county office.

Join Reclaim New York Initiative and legislation sponsor Legislator Joe Maloney for a discussion on why the term limits bill should be passed, and how you can help ensure it is approved. Dinner will be served, and Reclaim Initiative will then lead a walkover to the public hearing. I hope to see you there!
